In Liberia, poverty and illiteracy still affect much of the population. How can people be like the noble Bereans – examining the Scriptures daily – if they cannot read them? Discipling the next generation is key to lasting change.

Since 2003, Calvary Chapel Sonora has partnered with Calvary Chapels in Liberia. Our Liberia Scholarships ministry, launched in 2010, has grown from a few students to 175 for the academic year 2026-2027. The Liberia-side administrators of this program are among the earliest recipients, with Bachelor degrees in education and theology, who are committed to giving back by providing quality Christian education for their community at significantly lower cost than surrounding options. Most of our scholarship students attend this school, Daiwudu Preparatory Primary & Junior High School, with a few attending schools in more distant communities or for high school completion.

Initially through individual in-country Calvary Chapels, then in conjunction with midwife, evangelist, and professor, Wrepoandeh Bryant, and now in partnership with Anita Wonbenyakeh, registered district midwife extraordinaire, Kathi has been reaching out to educate and learn with and from traditional community midwives in Grand Bassa, Montserrado, Margibi, and currently upper Nimba Counties over the last 17 years.

Anita continues providing care for her district as a government employee despite never having been paid nor having her clinic supplied in her 9 years in this position. She relies on her oil palm farm to meet needs. Pictured is Anita at her dream-come-true, new Birth Center. So far, the 5 small buildings provide a birthing room, pharmacy, maternity waiting home, education room, and midwife’s office. Still needed are bathrooms, septic system, and kitchen. She also envisions a large gazebo for bigger classes, and, eventually, a full traditional midwives’ school to provide the 6-month trainings that have not been available in Nimba County for many years.
