Literacy – to read God’s Word
In Liberia, poverty and illiteracy still affect much of the population. How can people be like the noble Bereans – examining the Scriptures daily – if they cannot read them? Discipling the next generation is key to lasting change.
Since 2003, Calvary Chapel Sonora has partnered with Calvary Chapels in Liberia. Our Liberia Scholarships ministry, launched in 2010, has grown from a few students to 175 for the academic year 2026-2027. The Liberia-side administrators of this program are among the earliest recipients, with Bachelor degrees in education and theology, who are committed to giving back by providing quality Christian education for their community at significantly lower cost than surrounding options. Most of our scholarship students attend their school, Daiwudu Preparatory Primary & Junior High School, with a few attending schools in more distant communities or for high school completion.

Our focus is literacy, with support for high school completion as possible and limited help for college. We are currently in what should be the final semester of half scholarships for 6 of the Daiwudu faculty completing degrees in education, with Carver Christian University, where they attend, supplying the other half scholarship. We are also in the final semester of pre-med for one student whom we hope to continue supporting with the same forgivable loan contract through medical school, with funding to be forgiven, year for year, as he practices as a doctor within his own country of Liberia on completion.

LIBERIA MIDWIVES
for the Mothers & Babies
Initially through individual in-country Calvary Chapels, then in conjunction with midwife, evangelist, and professor, Wrepoandeh Bryant, and now in partnership with Anita Wonbenyakeh, registered district midwife extraordinaire, Kathi has been reaching out to educate and learn with and from traditional community midwives in Grand Bassa, Montserrado, Margibi, and currently upper Nimba Counties over the last 17 years.
Anita continues providing care for her district as a government employee despite never having been paid nor having her clinic supplied in her 9 years in this position. She relies on her oil palm farm and the Lord to meet needs. Pictured is Anita at her dream-come-true, new Birth Center. So far, the 5 small buildings provide a birthing room, pharmacy, maternity waiting home, education room, and midwife’s office. Still needed are bathrooms, septic system, and kitchen. She also envisions a large gazebo ("palava house" - a place of long conversations and community-building between people) for bigger classes, and, eventually, a full traditional midwives’ school to provide the 6-month trainings that have not been available in Nimba County for many years.

Anita's Birth Center
Our current goal is to provide extended educational workshops as we consult with midwifery leadership on building and developing Anita’s dream school. You can find here a photo gallery of previous one- to three-day gatherings from past years. Upcoming is a planned 2-week trip in January 2027 with an expected 30 midwives participating in our extended education program.

YEKEPA GIRLS’ CLUB
The Yekepa Girl's Club was developed by Rita Mendin and a fellow worker to foster self-respect, right living, hope, vision and purpose among the girls and young women of Yekepa. Discussion topics include self- respect, sexual purity, integrity, and life goals.
Rita, a mother of seven, has just completed her education major, with a specialty in math, at African Bible College University and has been a faithful team member for various midwives’ workshops in the bush. She has received support through Calvary Chapel Sonora to help her complete her studies and is now seeking a teaching position in the community.

Children's Shelters
The Mamie Gbluwon Hope Center in Larpea is a home for children from single-parent homes unable to provide for the children’s needs. Here they have access to adequate food, shelter, clothing, education, and love. The Center adjoins Anita’s Birth Center and, she provides care when health needs manifest.
The Hope Children's Home in Ganta currently cares for 35 orphans in Ganta, Nimba County - the second largest city in Liberia. In addition to providing daily care and provisions for the children, the orphanage also provides schooling. They have recently lost their major donor who provided the primary means for feeding the children.
Calvary Chapel Yekepa
Calvary Chapel Yekepa is a small but dedicated body of believers. One of two young Calvary Chapels in Nimba County, they are strongly focused on strengthening the local body; church planting in Ganta, the largest city, and Sanniquellie, the County Capital; and outreach into neighboring Guinea, a majority Muslim and least evangelized country in the world. They plan soon to begin a community garden and long term hope to build a much-needed day care as a community service as well as means of support for church ministry. Their immediate plan is working to partner with area elementary, junior high and high schools, and with the local hospital, to provide outreach and pastoral care as well as spending every Saturday in community evangelism.

Calvary Chapel Saving Grace
Calvary Chapel Saving Grace located on the outskirts of the capital city, is home to our most longterm and faithful coworkers who serve as pastor, church administrator, and principal of the associated preparatory and junior high school as well as vocational school where most of our scholarship students attend. They do strong outreach and mentoring work throughout the country and have big goals that include ongoing construction needs at their own church and school.
